EMODnet at the European MSP Week 2025: Supporting Data Harmonisation and Cooperation for Maritime Spatial Planning

News article |

At the start of the week, EMODnet was represented in the Informal Consultation Session of the Baltic Sea Region MSP Data Expert Sub-group (IC BSR MSP Data ESG 7-2025) hosted by HELCOM. The meeting reviewed recent developments in MSP data structures and the operationalisation of data-sharing systems such as Basemaps, with a strong focus on harmonisation across European regions. During this session, Jose L. Santiago (CETMAR) formally assumed the role of Co-Chair of the EU Technical Expert Group (TEG) on Data for MSP, sharing the position with Andrej Abramic (University of Las Palmas). This appointment reinforces EMODnet’s long-standing commitment – and expert advice - to improving interoperability, transparency and accessibility of marine data for spatial planning purposes at both European and regional levels.

Later in the week, EMODnet took part in the 7th Informal Consultation Session of the joint HELCOM–VASAB MSP Working Group, where discussions centred on information and data for MSP and on the coordination of activities under the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The session provided an opportunity to present the latest progress of the TEG on Data for MSP, where EMODnet’s data services and catalogue of national MSP plans were highlighted as essential components for achieving regional coherence and informed decision-making in MSP.

Throughout the European MSP Week, EMODnet’s relevance was also showcased through the ReMAP project, which presented ten new tools designed to enhance the monitoring and evaluation of MSP processes. All of these tools are built upon EMODnet data and services, particularly the availability of maritime spatial plans accessible through the EMODnet Portal. This demonstrates how EMODnet underpins technical innovation and supports the MSP community in applying consistent, high-quality data across Europe.
In addition, Jose L. Santiago (CETMAR, EMODnet Human Activities) participated in a policy round-table during the MSP Policy Day, where the importance of EMODnet’s role in data harmonisation and cross-border cooperation was underlined. The discussion highlighted EMODnet’s unique contribution as a trusted European data service supporting all sea basins, and as a cornerstone for evidence-based decision-making under the EU MSP Directive and the upcoming European Ocean Observation Initiative.

EMODnet’s active participation throughout the European MSP Week 2025 demonstrates its enduring commitment to support the European Commission, Member States and regional organisations in strengthening MSP data interoperability and accessibility. Through initiatives such as the EU MSP Technical Expert Group (TEG) on Data for MSP, the ReMAP project, and collaborations with HELCOM, VASAB and GNSBI, EMODnet continues to contribute to a more connected, transparent and data-driven approach to maritime spatial planning in Europe.
