European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet)

EMODnet expert contribution to the European Biodiversity Observation Coordination Centre (EBOCC)

News article |

The meeting brought together the full project consortium, including EMODnet Biology, alongside representative from the European Commission’s DG Environment and the European Environment Agency (EEA). EBOCC, funded under the Horizon Europe program, aims to establish a coordinated European framework for biodiversity observation by operationalising a core set of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), building on the foundations laid by the EuropaBON project. The initiative will support improved biodiversity data integration, monitoring harmonisation, and evidence-based policy making across Europe.

EMODnet Biology will play a key role in the project by contributing its expertise in marine biodiversity data management, interoperability standards, and long-term data infrastructures. The team will also facilitate connections with existing marine observation networks, biodiversity initiatives, and data providers, helping ensure that marine EBVs are effectively integrated into the broader European biodiversity observation system.
