EMODnet Geology experts meet in Copenhagen to advance EMODnet’s marine and coastal geological offer

More than 60 experts from 31 organisations across 29 countries gathered in Copenhagen 9-11 June for the EMODnet Geology project meeting, hosted by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS). The meeting took place in the beautiful setting of Eigtveds Pakhus, offering excellent facilities right on the quai of Copenhagen harbour.

Over three productive days, project members reviewed progress, advanced key data products, and strengthened collaboration within the consortium and with external participants. The high level of engagement emphasized the collective commitment to delivering impactful and high-quality outputs.

The project meeting combined project updates, technical sessions, discussions on future collaboration, and presentations showcasing the diverse use and impact of EMODnet Geology project and data products. Over the three days, project participants confirmed that work is progressing well and aligned priorities for the coming months.

Technical discussions focused on advancing new deliverables, including work on sediment organic carbon, geomorphology, coastal ribbon, Lithotectonic units, coastal flooding & tsunami affected coasts as well as radiocarbon dating. Interactive sessions and breakout discussions provided an opportunity to refine methodologies, address challenges, and define concrete next steps for ongoing deliverables.

The meeting also placed emphasis on collaboration and user needs. The participation of International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) opened up promising areas for future cooperation. In addition, participants exchanged updates on related European initiatives, including the projects SUBNORDICA (Aarhus University, Denmark) and Geological Service for Europe (GSEU) and developments linked to offshore energy. These discussions helped to situate EMODnet Geology within the broader marine data and policy landscape and identify synergies with ongoing work.

The project meeting also welcomed the EMODnet Seabed Habitat Mapping team, continuing discussions on seabed substrate topics initiated at previous events. This collaboration highlights ongoing efforts to strengthen integration across EMODnet themes.
