EMODnet Geology phase 2025-2027 begins

News article |

EMODnet Geology has started a new phase, which began on 25th September 2025 and will continue for two years, followed by a potential two-year extension. The project is coordinated by the Geological Survey of Finland GTK and implemented by a consortium of 39 partners and subcontractors. Most participants are members of the EuroGeoSurveys network, supported by other organisations with valuable expertise and data.

During this new phase, EMODnet Geology will develop new data and data products on organic carbon content of sediments, Carbon-14 measurements of strata, and geotechnical properties of the seabed. In addition, existing data sets describing seabed substrates, seafloor geology, coastal behaviour, geological events, marine minerals, submerged landscapes and geological indexes (boreholes, grabs and geophysics) will be updated with new or improved data. The geographical scope of the project includes European marine areas as well as the Caribbean Sea.

"We’re pleased to continue our work with EMODnet Geology and are particularly excited to begin developing new products together, such as those related to organic carbon in sediments, carbon-14 measurements of strata, and the geotechnical properties of the seabed."

Anu Kaskela, EMODnet Geology Coordinator, Geological Survey of Finland GTK

The new phase got off to a strong start with a kick-off meeting held online on 30 September to 1 October 2025, bringing together up to 60 participants, with nearly all project organisations represented. During the event, the work package leaders presented their plans for the upcoming two-year period, and the discussion will continue at the EMODnet Jamboree in Brussels, where the team will focus on the development of new data products and other strategic topics ahead of the Open Conference on 25-26 November 2025.
