As global ocean challenges intensify, access to reliable and harmonised marine data remains crucial for science, policy, and innovation. EMODnet’s Physics experts continue to respond to this need by continuously expanding EMODnet’s ocean physics data offer and coverage. Between 1 September and mid-October 2025, the service integrated over 60,000 new datasets, connecting thousands of new observation platforms and enriching data availability across European seas and beyond.
This major update includes 55,482 Conductivity, Temperature Depth (CTD) profiles and 6,029 data points from animal-borne instruments, alongside new inputs from fishing vessels (255), drifting buoys (111), Argo profilers (110), thermosalinographs (257), gliders (33), and other platforms such as tide gauges, moorings, river stations, and even a saildrone. Together, these additions provide critical measurements of ocean parameters, including water temperature (62,424 new records), salinity (61,704), dissolved oxygen (6,095), carbon system (48), sea level (18), currents (34), and waves (26) — among others.
Much of the newly integrated data comes from the period 2020–2023, filling historical gaps and enhancing long-term trend analysis across the European and Southern Ocean basins. This enriched dataset helps refine our understanding of essential ocean variables such as temperature, salinity, oxygen, and carbon dynamics — key indicators for climate variability, ocean health, and ecosystem change.
Visualisations accompanying this update illustrate the expanded coverage of platforms across European waters and the Southern Ocean, highlighting new connections from coastal stations to deep-sea observation points. The growing diversity of observing systems strengthens EMODnet Physics’ role in supporting climate research, marine monitoring, and policy implementation.
These contributions also reinforce Europe’s marine knowledge infrastructure, feeding into major initiatives such as the European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO), the Copernicus Marine Service, and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
The full dataset inventory, provider list, and visual maps are available on the EMODnet portal under the Physics area, where users can explore the latest data, trends, and tools for analysis.
