Broadscale habitat (EUNIS level 3) for Kentish Knock East (rMCZ)
Updated habitat map resulting from an intergrated analysis of the acoustic and ground-truth survey data from 2014 (onboard the RV Cefas Endeavour). Sediment types at each groundtruthing station were used to inform a semi-automated process of map production using object-based image analysis (OBIA). The majority of the seabed was classified as 'A5.4Subtidal mixed sediments', with patches of 'A5.1 Subtidal coarse sediment'and 'A5.2Subtidal sand'.

Algemene beschrijving herkomst | Multibeam echo-sounder (MBES) data were collected by Cefas and Natural England during the dedicated survey of the site in January 2014. Survey lines were performed in a north-south orientation with the aim to acquire full MBES data coverage. Bathymetric data were collected and processed in accordance with the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Standards for Hydrographic Surveys - Order 1 (IHO, 2008). Processing of the backscatter data was undertaken by Cefas using the raw data collected. Further details on the acquisition and processing of MBES data can be found in the Kentish Knock East rMCZ Survey Report (Nicolaus and Ware, 2014). Processing of the bathymetry data was undertaken by Cefas using the Caris software package. Backscatter data was also processed by Cefas, using the software package QPS FM Geocoder Toolkit (FMGT). Fully compensated and corrected bathymetry and backscatter mosaic images were produced and exported as Floating Point Geotiff files for further analysis. Both bathymetry and backscatter were gridded at 2 m resolution for analysis (see Appendix 2 for images derived from acoustic data). Ground truth stations were distributed across the rMCZ to ensure adequate density of sampling across all acoustically defined facies identified in the newly acquired MBES bathymetry and backscatter data. Benthic grabs and an underwater camera system were used at all stations to collect sediments, infauna, and video and still images of the seabed (Figure 2; Appendix 1). Sampling equipment consisted of a 0.1 m2 mini Hamon grab. On recovery, the grab contents were emptied into a large plastic bin and a representative sub-sample of sediment (approx. 0.5 litres) taken for particle size analysis (PSA). The remaining sample was photographed and sieved over a 1 mm mesh sieve to collect the benthic fauna. Fauna were preserved in buffered 4% formaldehyde for later processing ashore. A drop-down camera frame was used to collect video and still images at all stations. Set-up and operation followed the MESH Recommended Operating Guidelines (ROG) for underwater video and photographic imaging techniques (Coggan et al., 2007). Drop camera tows lasted a minimum of 10 minutes at a speed of approximately 0.5 knots (c. 0.25 m s -1 ) across a 100 m ÔÇÿbullringÔÇÖ centred on the sampling station. Still images were captured at regular one-minute intervals and opportunistically if specific features of interest were encountered. Video and still images were analysed following an established protocol developed and used by Cefas (Coggan and Howell, 2005, JNCC, in prep.; see Annex 5). For further detail on ground truth sample collection see the Kentish Knock East rMCZ Survey Report (Nicolaus and Ware, 2014). |
