Bathymetry in the area of the Spanish margin of the Alboran Sea
This bathymetry was recovered in the framework of the MTP II MATTER, whose main objective is to study and to quantify the triggering and controlling mechanisms of mass and energy transfer between the different compartments (land - sea, sea - atmosphere, water - sediment, living - non living, pelagos - benthos), in contrasting trophic environments (from eutrophic to oligotrophic) of the Mediterranean Sea and to investigate the ecosystem response to such a transfer.

Lineage
Statement | Data was recovered with the Simrad EM-12 S120 multibeam echosounder, designed to perform bathymetric surveys of seabed to depths greater than 11000 meters, complying with IHO S44 regulations for such surveys. This system covers a sector of the seafloor approximately three times the water depth at which it is working, uses a frequency of 12 kHz, has an aperture angle of 120°, and provides 81 bathymetry values across the ship track, corrected for the geometric propagation of sound in the stratified water column. |
