Broadscale habitat (EUNIS level 3) for Hythe Bay (rMCZ)
Broadscale habitat (EUNIS level 3) for Hythe Bay (rMCZ) recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ)
Updated habitat map resulting from an intergrated analysis of the acoustic and ground-truth survey data from 2012. The ground-truthing survey was carried out by the Environment Agency (EA) on the 26th March 2012 using the MV Sea Vigil. The site is predominantly characterised as A5.3 Subtidal mud.

Algemene beschrijving herkomst | Multibeam echosounder data already existed for the inshore area of the Hythe Bay rMCZ, extending approximately from the Mean Low Water Springs (MLWS) contour to 1 km offshore (Kinnear, 2011). New multibeam bathymetry echosounder (MBES) and backscatter data were acquired by Titan Environmental Surveys Ltd between 23rd February and 1st April 2012. The new survey concentrated on the offshore area of the rMCZ and was conducted on the MV Titan Explorer using a pole mounted Geoacoustics GeoSwath Plus Swathe Bathymetry System. Due to operational constraints (see Titan Environmental Surveys Ltd, 2012) and the limitations of time available for survey, full acoustic data coverage across the site was not achieved. Images derived from the acoustic data are presented in Appendix 2, and the area surveyed is outlined in Figure 2. The bathymetric data were collected and processed in accordance with the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Standards for Hydrographic Surveys - Order 1 (Special Publication 44, Edition 4). For further detail on the acoustic data acquisition see ÔÇÿLot 16 Hythe Bay rMCZ Acoustic Survey: End of Cruise ReportÔÇÖ (Titan Environmental Surveys Ltd, 2012). Ground truth samples were collected from 21 stations within the Hythe Bay rMCZ. A grid spacing of 1.0 km was used to ensure sufficient sample numbers were collected from the subtidal mud BSH proposed for designation (Balanced Seas, 2011). For additional value, station positions were plotted according to the historical Hythe Bay Long Sea Outfall benthic sampling grid carried out by the Environment Agency annually between 1982 and 1993. The ground-truthing survey was carried out by the Environment Agency (EA) on the 26th March 2012 using the MV Sea Vigil. Benthic grabs were utilised at all stations to collect sediments and infauna (Figure 2; Appendix 1). An underwater camera system was not employed at this site due to the limitations of time available for survey. Sampling was undertaken using 0.1 m2 Day Grab. On recovery, the grab was photographed and a representative sub-sample of sediment (approx. 60 ml) taken for Particle Size Analysis (PSA) using a full depth core. The remaining sample was photographed and sieved over a 1 mm mesh sieve to collect the benthic fauna. Fauna were preserved in buffered 8% formaldehyde for later processing ashore. Additionally, 10 of these stations were resampled using the Water Framework Directive (WFD) protocol (separate grab samples for benthic infauna and PSA; replicate B). For further detail on ground truth sample collection see ÔÇÿHythe Bay rMCZ Survey ReportÔÇÖ (Godsell and Meakins, in prep.). |
