Biogenic substrate in European waters

This layer shows the current known extent of biogenic substrate in European waters. This product was first produced in 2021 with the aim to add a new class of substrate into the EUSeaMap substrate layer. This was required in order to classify the EUSeaMap broad-scale habitat map according to the 2019 version of the EUNIS habitat classification system, which includes a biogenic substrate category. This layer has been updated in 2023 to feed into an updated version of EUSeaMap. The geographic extent of this product was extended in 2023 to include jurisdictional waters (including continental shelf and claimed extended continental shelf) of EU Member States, the United Kingdom (UK) and Norway including areas in the Caribbean Sea.

Statement

This dataset was first created in 2021 by extracting relevant polygons from the EMODnet Seabed Habitats collation of individual habitat maps from surveys. This product was updated in 2023 using the individual habitat maps from survey that were available on the 18th May 2023 in combination with Caribbean data from the UNEP WCMC Global Distribution of Coral Reefs data. Only a subset of the UNEP-WCMC data were used in this product, namely in the areas of interest in the Caribbean Sea and particular habitats. The products were clipped to these areas and then filtered and combined with the EMODnet Seabed Habitats data. The attributes were amended to remove many fields that are redundant for this data layer e.g. taxonomic fields and areas. Information about the source were retained. Where overlaps in polygons occurred preference was given to the habitat maps from survey collated by EMODnet Seabed Habitats.
