DPLUS0045 Anguilla Seabed Classification from MBES data

Seabed classification and habitat map based on the MBES data collected as part of the Darwin Plus funded project "Mapping Anguilla's 'Blue Belt' Ecosystem Services". The project develops local capacity to undertake comprehensive marine resource assessments of Anguilla's 'Blue-Belt', delivering best practice guidance for combining satellite and acoustic surveys, to extend mapping into deeper waters for the first time. The complexity of this shapefile means that it can only be dowloaded as a binary file and is not available via WMS/WFS.

Statement

The seabed classification and habitat map was created from the MBES bathymetry and backscatter data using the classified video and stills data for groundtruthing data which were all collected as part of this project. Maps were created using object based image analysis (OBIA) which is a two-step process which involves the segmentation and then classification of an image. The MBES data was segmented using the multi-resolution segmentation algorithm within Trimble's eCognition software (v9.0.0) and classified using a random forest classification algorithm trained using the classified still image locations. The map created from the MBES bathymetry and backscatter data was classified to the simpler habitat classification of Seagrass, Algae, Bare and Mosaic. For publication to EMODnet, SAERI reprojected the vector using the EPSG:4326 - WGS 84 coordinate system, cleaned the data in mapshaper.org using the -clean function, and processed the attribute table to fit the specified data exchange format. All work was conducted in QGIS v3.28.4. SAERI used the CEFAS assigned GUI (62e09c46-66f7-41ea-a1f7-dc0500164ab7) as the edited dataset's UUID. SAERI created a new GUI (AI004004) for the map published on EMODnet.
