Broadscale habitat (EUNIS level 3) for Inner Bank recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ)

Updated habitat map resulting from an intergrated analysis of the acoustic and groundtruthsurvey data in 2014 (onboard the RV Cefas Endeavour). Sediment types at each groundtruthing station were used to inform a semi-automated process of map production using object-based image analysis (OBIA). The majority of the seabed was classified as 'A5.2 Subtidal sand', with patches of 'A5.1 Subtidal coarse sediment' and 'A5.4 Subtidal mixed sediments'.

Statement

The new broadscales habitat map (BSH) for this site was produced by analysing and interpreting the available acoustic and ground truth data collected by the dedicated survey of this site in 2014. The process is a combination of two approaches, statistical modelling and object-based image analysis (OBIA). OBIA is a two-step approach consisting of segmentation and classification, implemented in the software package eCognition v9.0.3. The backscatter and bathymetry images are segmented into objects (sections of the image with homogeneous backscatter and bathymetry characteristics). For each of these objects, mean values of the primary acoustic data layers and their derivatives were calculated and used to inform further analysis. A combination of manual classification rules and Random Forest (RF) models were used to interpret ground-truth data, and to predict substrate type across the rMCZ. Where available, habitat boundaries have been defined based on a combination of bathymetry and backscatter and associated derivatives, with these predictor layers incorportated into the RF model. In the rest of the site, where backscatter data was not available, bathymetry and associated derivatives have been used in isolation to produce a BSH map. For the portion of the site where backscatter is not available the associated confidence of habitat boundaries is lower.
