Biotope map for Strangford Lough (Narrows)
A biotope analysis of Strangford lough was conducted in 2015 as part of efforts to understand the distribution and extent of benthic habitats and associated marine life within this waterbody incorporating new and historical groundtruthing information alongside modern acoustic data.The analysis was conducted on both the main lough and the "Narrows" to the south.
This dataset comprises the biotope complex output of the southern narrows.
The map was originally presented in the Marine Habitat Classification for Britain & Ireland (http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/MarineHabitatClassification). This has been translated to the EUNIS habitat classification system for integration with other European datasets.

| Algemene beschrijving herkomst | Due to the high number of habitats identified in the ground-truthing data, the use of habitatmosaics and the variation in ancillary data (e.g. detailed substratum descriptions), the groundtruthingrecords were summarised into a smaller number of categories to allow possiblecorrespondence with the multibeam data derived ÔÇ£acoustic faciesÔÇØ. Level 4 ÔÇ£dominant biotopecomplexesÔÇØ were assigned with a total of 45 categories. These were further narrowed to 24 single(non-mosaic) biotope complexes which records were slotted into. The clusters identified from the cluster analysis of the multibeam data were cross-tabulated with the summary biotope complexes and the ÔÇ£majorityÔÇØ biotope complex noted for each cluster. Due to the number of summary biotope complexes, it was inevitable that multiple biotope complexes mapped to each cluster. Therefore, a detailed inspection was made of each area in the lough toexamine (a) the trends in the multibeam data (bathymetric derivatives and backscatter), and (b)the details of the ground-truthing data in the area (including the original, rather than summary,biotope information, including mosaics). Polygon attributes were revised accordingly to best represent, consistently, the information shown in these datasets. Accuracy assessment was undertaken by comparing the ground-truthing biotope complexes(MNCR Level 4) with the mapped polygons (also classified at biotope complexes). The percentage of agreement was calculated for each map (main lough and the Narrows). Due to the use of mosaics, agreement was given if an example of the biotope complex in the ground-truthing samples was also in the polygon classification.ÔÇó Agreement of 71.7% in the main Lough (all ground-truthing data included). In addition to the accuracy assessment, a confidence assessment was completed following the MESH method (MESH, 2007). |
