Welsh Marine Article 17 Reporting Habitat Features - Reef (2018)

Reporting under Article 17 of the EU Habitats Directive requires member states to report on progress towards achieving favourable conservation status for habitats and species of Community Importance. The assessment of conservation status does not only relate to that component of the habitat area or species population to be found in Special Areas of Conservation, but to the totality of the habitats and species throughout the United Kingdom.

The results of NRW's feature monitoring work and other evidence collected (survey) or collated (other data sources) on reef feature extent feed in to the process of mapping and reporting under Article 17. JNCC coordinate and provide UK-level feature reports under Article 17; England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland submit country-level data and information to inform these reports.

This dataset only consists of the Welsh component of the Article 17 reef mapping.

Statement

The Habitats Directive Article 17 reporting maps are a snapshot of the most up to date spatial data for features listed on the various Annexes of the Directive at the time of reporting. They represent the current known extent / location and status of features both inside and outside of SACs. Article 17 maps are reviewed and updated every 6 years as part of the Habitats Directive reporting process (with possible interim updates occurring in line with JNCCÔÇÖs Article 17 mapping programme).

The layers are created by collating records from numerous surveys, monitoring programmes, expert knowledge and third party providers and then combining them using GIS to produce layers containing points, polygons or lines. The layers are updated when new records are produced. The original surveys and monitoring events from which the records have been extracted vary widely in dates going back many decades in some cases, with confidence varying significantly. Consists of 18 dataset layers covering Annex 1 marine features. This dataset is updated approximately every 6 years.
