Broadscale habitat (EUNIS level 3) for Sleive na Griddle recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ)

A broadscale habitat feature class was created to illustrate the predicted extent of broadscale habitats present at Slieve na Griddle rMCZ. These broadscale habitats include 'Subtidal mud' and 'Low energy circalittoral rock' as determined from particle size analysis of sedimen grab samples and descriptive analysis of still images from underwater camera data. The assigned classes of each ground-truth station were used to inform the semi-automated process of map production using object-based image analysis (OBIA).

Statement

Acoustic datasets from two surveys were used to aid the mapping of the seabed within the Slieve na Griddle rMCZ. The first survey, conducted in 2007, was by AFBI, and targeted the Pisces Reef SAC region as part of the Mapping European Seabed Habitats (MESH) programme. It acquired multibeam data using a Kongsberg Simrad EM1002-S multibeam echosounder (MBES). The second survey was undertaken in 2012 aboard the RV Corystes (cruise code: CO082012), again by AFBI, using a Kongsberg Simrad 300 kHz EM3002 MBES.

All MBES data were collected and processed in accordance with the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Standards for Hydrographic Surveys - Order 1. Both bathymetry and backscatter datasets were gridded at 3 m resolution for analysis (see Appendix 2 for images derived from acoustic data).

Existing data from groundtruthing surveys conducted by AFBI in 2012 and for the 2004 Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Irish Sea (SEA 6; Judd, 2004) were included in the habitat mapping process reported here. These data consisted of photographic stills of the seabed.

Existing data were supplemented with further ground truth sampling by a dedicated survey of the site aboard the RV Cefas Endeavour in July 2014 (cruise code CEND1414). Newly acquired ground truth samples consisted of video footage and still photographs of the seabed. No sediment or faunal grab data were collected.

Eight underwater camera tows were undertaken during cruise CEND1414, targeting specific features of interest within the rMCZ, namely, low energy circalittoral rock outcrops thought to occur in isolated patches within the surrounding subtidal mud habitat. Video transects were made using a drop-down camera platform. Set-up and operation followed the MESH Recommended Operating Guidelines for underwater video and photographic imaging techniques.

Aboard RV Cefas Endeavour, the drop-camera platform was lowered to the seabed from the side gantry whilst maintaining a speed of c. 0.5 knots. Each sampling transect lasted approximately 30 minutes. The camera and lighting system was supplemented by a four-point laser scaling device to provide a reference scale in the recorded images. A video overlay was used to provide station metadata, time and GPS position (of the vessel) in the recorded video image. Video was recorded simultaneously to a DV tape and a computer hard drive. Still photographs were captured at regular one minute intervals and opportunistically if specific features of interest were encountered. Back onshore, video and still images were analysed following an established protocol developed and used by Cefas.

The new broadscale habitat map was produced by analysing and interpreting the available acoustic and ground truth data collected during all surveys of Slieve na Griddle rMCZ. Acoustic data were converted to raster images for ease of interpretation. The data integration and mapping process involved object-based image analysis (OBIA) implemented in the software package eCognition v9.0.2.
