SAHFOS is unique in having comparable data on the geographical distribution, seasonal cycles and year-to-year changes in abundance of plankton over a large spatial area. There is no other survey in the world with 80 years of marine plankton data.

Data from seven historical ICES volumes has been digitized and quality checked through a cooperative project between SAHFOS, ICES and the University of Plymouth (UK). Data include >13,000 plankton samples. Approximately 2000 taxa, many identified to species level, are included. The data are from a variety of cruises.
