Dataset contains bio-optical measurements carried out at Utö Atmospheric and Marine research station, from spring 2017 to spring 2018. Dataset includes continuous measurements of temperature, salinity, O2, fluorescence for Chlorophyll, phycocyanin, phycoerythrin and CDOM, spectral fluorescence and FRRF fluorometry from a flow-through system (sampling depth -5 m). Data set also includes 3-4 1-week campaigns to measure exctracted Chlorophyll, spectral absorption and fluorescence, primary production and nutrients.

<figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td>The data set available here is published with article “Kraft et al. (2022). Towards operational phytoplankton recognition with automated high-throughput imaging, near real-time data processing, and convolutional neural networks. Front Mar. Sci. 9. Doi: 10.3389/fmars.2022.867695” and if used for further purposes, the article should be cited accordingly. The data set contains approximately 150 000 images belonging to 50 different classes (~57 000) + unclassifiable (~94 000) consisting mainly of phytoplankton. The images can be used to validate classifier model performance with data from natural samples. The images were collected with an Imaging FlowCytobot from a continuous deployment in 2021 at the Utö Atmospheric and Marine Research Station operated by Finnish Environment Institute and Finnish Meteorological Institute. The images were manually annotated by expert taxonomists.&nbsp;</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

Dataset contains ferrybox (ferry Silja Serenade) measurements between Helsinki and Stockholm from spring 2017 to spring 2018. Dataset includes continuous measurements of temperature, salinity, O2, fluorescence for Chlorophyll, phycocyanin, and CDOM from a flow-through system (sampling depth -5 m). Data set also includes monthly/weekly measurements of extracted Chlorophyll.

Dataset contains phycoeythrin fluorescence records during transects of ferry Finnmaid 25.5–31.8.2016 (four times per week) between Helsinki and Travemunde. Fluorescence was measured 20 second intervals using Microflu-red (Trios Gmbh) and Unilux -PE (Chelsea Technologies) fluorometers, installed in flow-through system. Water samples were collected weekly from three locations and ell counts of phycoerythrin containing species were carried out using epifluoresence microsopy (picocyanobacteria) and flowCam (larger cells).

The KPLANK database includes data on phytoplankton, covering the Finnish coastal areas as well as the offshore areas of the Baltic Sea. The quantitative data mainly stem from the Finnish national monitoring program and statutory monitoring programs. In total the database contain approximately 240 000 quantitative records including size classes. The data span from 1937 to present. The database is regularly maintained and data is added continuously.

The dataset include Finnish zooplankton monitoring data from the Baltic Sea. The Finnish zooplankton monitoring program started in 1979 and is still ongoing. The sampling has normally taken place in late summer (August), but since 2014 sampling is also carried out in early summer (May-June).The zooplankton monitoring was performed by Finnish Institute of Marine Research until 2008, thereafter the Finnish Environment Institute is responsible for the monitoring program. Samples are taken using a WP-2 net (normally 2550 cm2 opening and 100 um mesh size). The monitoring follows the HELCOM COMBINE guidelines, but subsampling is done using Folsom splitter. The dataset is also accessible through the NOAA COPEPOD database.

The POHJE database includes data on benthic macrofauna, covering the Finnish coastal areas as well as the offshore areas of the Baltic Sea. The quantitative data mainly stem from the Finnish national monitoring program and statutory monitoring programs, but also data from surveys and research projects are included. In total the database contain aproximately 100 000 quantitative records including developmental stages, with a time span from 1965 to present. The database is regularly maintained and data is added continuously.

The dataset contains data collected as part of the Finnish macrophyte monitoring programme. Coverage and length data of macrophytes are collected along dive transects at 1 m depth intervals on hard substrate bottoms. At present, the dataset includes eigth transects on the Finnish south coast and sampled 2011-2018.

This datasets contains data from continuous measurements along the Tavastland (formerly TransPaper) Serenade ferry line between Oulu-Kemi and Lübeck. At the depth of three meter under the water surface, sea water is constantly pumped into an on-board mini-laboratory. Parameters collected include chloropyll a, phycocyanin and CDOM fluorescence and turbidity.
