At the Living Data 2025 conference, which took place 21–24 October 2025 in Bogotá, Colombia, EMODnet Biology showcased its diverse work through several presentations, highlighting the consortium’s broad activities and its connections to other European and global marine-data initiatives.
EMODnet’s Chemistry experts presented at SciDataCon 2025, an integral part of International Data Week 2025 which took place in Brisbane, Australia, 13-16 October 2025. Taking part in a session on the transformative role of data in SDGs and disaster resilience, EMODnet presented on how its service supports international marine policy against marine pollution. This included A wide range of EMODnet use cases, involving various types of data providers and users. The marine knowledge value chain at…
The Digital Ocean Forum 2025 (DOF) will take place on 27–28 November in Brussels, marking an important milestone in the co-development of the European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO). As the in situ marine data component, EMODnet plays a key role in EDITO and is co-organising the DOF with EMODnet experts also contributing to high-level discussions, demonstrations, and technical sessions shaping Europe’s digital ocean future. The event will unveil Phase 2 of EDITO which includes wider onboarding of…
The stage is set for the EMODnet Open Conference 2025, taking place on 25–26 November in Brussels with the launch of the full programme online. The event titled “EMODnet: an essential marine data service for the European Ocean Pact” will bring together EMODnet partners and wider marine data experts, policymakers, scientists, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and more to explore how EMODnet is a cornerstone of EU Marine Knowledge central to delivering the European Ocean Pact,…
During the European Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) Data Week 2025, EMODnet played a key role in strengthening cooperation and harmonisation of marine data and information services to support MSP implementation across European sea basins. The event, held in Helsinki, gathered representatives from the European Commission, regional sea conventions, national authorities and wider experts including EMODnet as the EU marine data service hosting Member State MSPs and making these available as…
On 29 September, the webinar with the EMODnet Chemistry Board of Experts on the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) was held online to showcase the new climatologies for parameters that enable scientists to assess the trophic state of marine waters. Since 2017, collecting feedback from experts is a powerful method that EMODnet Chemistry has used to fine-tune data products according to MSFD needs.
EMODnet Geology has started a new phase, which began on 25th September 2025 and will continue for two years, followed by a potential two-year extension. The project is coordinated by the Geological Survey of Finland GTK and implemented by a consortium of 39 partners and subcontractors. Most participants are members of the EuroGeoSurveys network, supported by other organisations with valuable expertise and data.
As global ocean challenges intensify, access to reliable and harmonised marine data remains crucial for science, policy, and innovation. EMODnet’s Physics experts continue to respond to this need by continuously expanding EMODnet’s ocean physics data offer and coverage. Between 1 September and mid-October 2025, the service integrated over 60,000 new datasets, connecting thousands of new observation platforms and enriching data availability across European seas and beyond.
In 2024, EMODnet co-contributed to the writing of the MSPglobal Data Toolbox: Volume 1 – How to develop a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for Marine Spatial Planning, a guidance document developed by the MSPglobal initiative, designed to equip Marine Spatial Planning practitioners with the tools and knowledge necessary to develop and maintain a robust SDI that support long-term marine planning objectives.
The product, which is continuously being updated, is a major activity of the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force which was created in 2013 by the International Committee on Marine Mammal Protected Areas (ICMMPA), the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) Marine Vice Chair, and members of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC).
