Map of the Week – EU4Ocean – Ocean Literacy in Action

News article |
This map shows the members of the three communities of the EU4Ocean Coalition dedicated to Ocean Literacy: the EU4Ocean Platform, the Young Ocean Advocates within the Youth4Ocean Forum and the Network of European Blue Schools.

It has been an amazing week so far and more is coming! The European Ocean Days have brought together people from across Europe for a series of events related to European maritime topics. Tomorrow, on 8 March 2024, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and the vibrant EU4Ocean Coalition on Ocean Literacy are organising the Ocean Literacy in Action event in Brussels (Belgium) with the support of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO ( IOC/UNESCO ). The event includes a conference and an exhibition.

The EU4Ocean Coalition brings together organisations, individuals, young people and schools from all over Europe who work on Ocean Literacy. It is composed of three communities: the Platform for organisations (e.g., research institutes, non-governmental organisations, associations, companies), projects, networks, clusters and individuals engaged in Ocean Literacy initiatives, the Youth4Ocean Forum for young people between 16 and 30 and the Network of European Blue Schools. It has seen great growth since its launch in 2020. The EU4Ocean Platform now gathers 163 members. The Youth4Ocean Forum brings together 366 members including 218 Young Ocean Advocates. And, the Network of European Blue Schools comprises 341 schools. Explore the Map of the Week to see who they are and what they do!

Participants in the conference will have the opportunity to hear a very interesting dialogue between Young Ocean Advocates and Director-General of DG MARE Charlina Vitcheva. Several panels are expected to lead to insightful discussions on various topics:

  • ocean literacy as pre-condition for a sustainable blue economy;
  • bringing the ocean to the classrooms;
  • engaging the wider public in ocean literacy; and
  • imagining our future sustainable ocean.

The closing session will focus on delivering the EU4Ocean vision.

Throughout the day, participants of the conference will also be able to visit the ‘Ocean Literacy Island‘ - the Ocean Literacy in Action exhibition – which will gather members from the three EU4Ocean communities who will showcase their work on ocean literacy in six different areas: the Schools Corner, the Research Corner, the Art Gallery, the City Hall, the Market Place and the Port Area and Blue economy. The exhibition will also include the IOC UNESCO travelling Ocean&Climate Village that will allow visitors of the Ocean Literacy Island to connect to the Ocean.

The European Atlas of the Seas will be in the Schools Corner. Come to see us!

We look forward to a great inspiring day of shared experience and knowledge!
