Map of the Week – European Ocean Days - Mission Restore our Ocean & Waters Forum

News article |
This map shows the Mission Actions pledged by stakeholders across Europe to achieve the objectives of the European Union (EU) Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ by 2030.

Next week, the European Ocean Days will bring together people from across Europe for a series of events related to European maritime topics which will take place in Brussels (Belgium):

What is the EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’, you ask? The EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments. The three objectives of the Mission are to:

  1. Protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030;
  2. Prevent and eliminate pollution of our ocean, seas and waters, in line with the EU Action Plan Towards Zero Pollution for Air, Water and Soil;
  3. Make the sustainable blue economy carbon-neutral and circular, in line with the proposed European Climate Law and the holistic vision enshrined in the Sustainable Blue Economy Strategy.

To reach these objectives, the Mission is also putting in place two enablers:

  1. Digital Ocean and Water Knowledge System;
  2. Public mobilisation and engagement.

The Forum of the Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’, which will take place on 5 March, will aim at taking stock of the Mission’s progress and major achievements, at mobilising relevant actors around key Mission deliverables and at preparing the ground for the next phase of the Mission, moving from demonstration to deployment.

Wish to learn about the actions undertaken in the framework of the EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ ahead of the Forum? Make sure that you explore the latest update of the European Atlas of the Seas’ map layer on ‘Mission Actions’! These actions present the joint efforts to achieve the objectives of Mission Ocean and Waters. Each of the lighthouses in the map represents an action pledged by a signatory of the Mission Charter. Click on them to read the details of each action. The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), which powers the European Atlas of the Seas, submitted an action — Evolving marine data and knowledge services — in 2023, committing to continuously delivering the access and provision of marine knowledge to underpin the core objectives of the EU Mission. Can you find EMODnet’s pledged action on the map (hint: the EMODnet Secretariat is based in Belgium and the action is found in the category ‘Evidence-based knowledge and data’)?

Will you attend the European Ocean Days? So will the European Atlas of the Seas! Don’t miss the Atlas’ poster at the event ‘Where next for Europe's Seas?’ and come to meet us in the ‘Schools Corner ‘of the exhibition at the event Ocean Literacy in Action!
