The Atlantic Checkpoint was a system-wide monitoring  assessment activity which had aimed to support the sustainable Blue Growth at the scale of the North Atlantic Ocean. The assessment was performed by clarifying the observation landscape, evaluating the fitness for use of current observations and data assembly programs towards targeted applications (challenges). Furthermore,  the needs to optimize monitoring systems were prioritised in terms of availability, operational reliability, efficiency, time consistency, space consistency, etc. and observational priorities required in the future to meet the challenges.

Challenges

The methodology focused primarily on end-user applications and involveed the assessment of the upstream data against 11 important challenges relevant to sustainable blue growth. These challenges were regional case-studies which, through concrete demonstrations of use and value, had contributed in the sea basin scale assessment of the Atlantic’s observing infrastructure.
