Europe has a strong capability for marine and wider environmental research and innovation and many of the EMODnet partner organisations, data aggregators and data providers are Research Performing Organisations and academic Institutions, including universities. Research and academia provide a huge amount of data into EMODnet, with many data being managed at National level by National Oceanographic Data Centres, Hydrographic Offices, Geological Surveys, Research Infrastructures (see ESFRI list and more) and operational oceanographic platforms e.g., EuroGOOS, before they reach EMODnet via established pipelines. The Research and Innovation community which spans the public and private sectors is also a key user of EMODnet services, for marine and coastal scientific research, computer modelling and wider applications.

EMODnet supports these organisations by:

  1. Giving access to data already collected reducing costly and expensive sampling campaigns;
  2. Providing ready-to-use data products that can support the daily work of researchers, expediting their research and career development;
  3. Making diverse datasets available through which they can enrich their research data;
  4. Stimulating further research both in marine environment and open data and favouring open dialogue (Every year there are plenty of opportunities to get in touch with EMODnet representatives. See where you can meet us at our upcoming events);
  5. Maximising the impact and re-use of research data by sharing with EMODnet. Submit your data and data products via the free-of-charge EMODnet Data Ingestion Portal.

Have a look at our Use Cases webpage to see how other organisations have benefitted from EMODnet.
