Outputs

The practical outputs of the project were:

  • A literature survey summarizing the previous studies followed by two Data Adequacy Reports (DAR) to provide an annual view of the monitoring effort in the sea-basin, outcome of challenges and any new information to report on the adequacy of the marine data in the North Atlantic ocean

- Literature Survey - Initial assessment of data fitness for use - July 2016

The report released the results of the literature survey exercise which identified the characteristics and upstream data-sets needed by the 11 challenges and helped answer the following questions in the context of the North Atlantic basin:

What are the existing overviews of data (what data is available, where and how is it being made available)?

When data is inadequate, is it due to reluctance of data owners to release data, lack of accuracy or other reasons)?

Are there any statements made about data fitness for purpose, e.g. use cases identified in the literature such as fish stock or environmental assessments, spatial planning, licensing, coastal protection, safe navigation?

- First Data Adequacy Report - May 2017

The report releases the results of the first assessment exercise on referenced upstream data sets, carried out by the 11 challenges to qualify the availability of actual data sets as procurable on 30/09/2016.  The discussion makes an attempt to understand data availability bottlenecks. A panel of experts was convened along with this release to assess the work performed and assist the project in its further achievements. The Panel consisted of eight - mostly scientific - experts covering the variety of the challenges. The Panel was convened from 7-8 Dec. 2016 at Eurogoos Brussels. Feedback from the expert panel  is given in the expert panel report. The DAR1 report takes into account their advice.

- Second Data Adequacy Report

This data adequacy report gives an account of the marine data landscape by analysing the contribution (or the lack) of data sets to the creation of products in the frame of 11 thematic challenges. The methodology, based on metadata catalogues and specifically quality measures derived from ISO, builds a quantitative comparison between the specifications of the products, their actual results and how suitably the existing data sets contributed to them. The results assess data from three standpoints: marine thematic domains (challenges), marine characteristics (parameters) and key EU providers, and make recommendation to improve the situation in three areas: by additional surveys, by strengthening data assembly, by improving data services.

- Second Data Adequacy Report - Annex 1 to 4

Annex 1 provides the comprehensive table of products components.  As a support to Table 3 in the core text, while using the same colour code, it gives a more detailed view of the proportion of components which could not be made or were produced in a limited or inadequate way, along with their detailed lineage (P02 and P01);

The bar charts in Annex 2 give a quantitative view of the quality measurements for each characteristic (parameter). An example of a set of bar charts is given in the introduction of section 3 (Data analysis), so the reader is guided to properly interpret them. For all the categories of characteristics (P02), placed in alphabetical order, the reader is invited to consult this Annex 2;

Annex 3 contains the list of the 53 products listed per challenge;

Annex 4 contains the list of the used data sets classified in providers’ names alphabetical order.

- Second Data Adequacy Report - Annex 5 & 6

This annex as a support to the bar charts for those wishing to know more about related data sets, contains all a series of spreadsheets exported from the catalogues in 3 separate annexes.

Annex 5 describes P02s for which the components were not covered for absence of data or for data not available.

Annex 6 contains all P02s not meeting the products requirements whose appropriateness was assessed. For each characteristic these spreadsheets enumerate all the concerned components and give a list of the contributing data sets. Having these three documents separate enables the reader of the printed reports to go from the P02 analysis firstly to corresponding bar charts and further to the related spreadsheets if desired.

  • A collection of relevant data and catalog of data sources and the development of specific products from available primary and assembled data sets in view of the specific questions for each challenge, providing confidence limits (service)
  • A fully implemented Web Portal (EMODnet Atlantic checkpoint) providing free and unconditional access to EMODnet portals, outputs from challenges in digital form (Inspire)
  • Two expert panel reports
  • A final report to summarize the work done in the project and a report indicating how the EMODnet Atlantic checkpoint Portal could operate once the project has finished
  • Several interim progress project reports made available only on DG-MARE's maritime forum.
  • Stakeholder workshop on EMODnet Atlantic Checkpoint Findings - February 2017

On 14 February 2017 afternoon stakeholder workshops, one per sea-basin, were organised by EMODnet as part of the EMODnet Stakeholder Conference (14-15 February 2017). Each sea-basin workshop was expected to come up with concrete recommendations to data adequacy issues identified within the framework of the sea-basin checkpoint. In this short report are presented the results of the Atlantic Workshop.

In the Report section, you can look through and download all the reports of Atlantic Checkpoint.
