The Black Sea checkpoint activity was undertaken by a European consortium of 8 partners and 8 subcontractors, involving 77 experts, plus an external expert panel. The project started on 15th July 2015 for a duration of 3 years. IO-BAS was leading the consortium.

Traditionally involved in all aspects of marine research, IO-BAS also offers consulting and expert services, environmental impact assessment studies, education and training. IO-BAS is the Regional Activity Centre and Focal Point of BSEP.

ORION - Joint Research and Development Centre

The ORION – Joint research and Development Centre, is a nonprofit institute based in Nicosia, Cyprus. Its members originate from academia, energy agencies, municipalities, governmental departments, research centers, SMEs and individual scientists sensitive to environmental issues and renewable energy promotion. They have extensive experience in project management and participation in research projects at European and national level (such as FP7, Intelligent Energy, MED, ENPI, INTERREG etc) and are heavily involved on the policy level both in Cyprus and in Europe. Furthermore, some of our members are involved on technical advisory committees for related work. The main objectives of ORION are 1) the promotion of research activities in the area of Cyprus and the Mediterranean in general, 2) development of operational information systems and forecasting of environmental phenomena affecting the region surrounding Cyprus 3) protection of natural resources and effective management of environmental risks (eg desertification, droughts, fires and floods, water pollution) 4) the organization of integrated databases, 5) to promote scientific excellence and optimal learning methods, as well as 6) updating and informing citizens and local authorities of Cyprus for the purposes of the Institute.

The Sofia University, St. Kliment Ohridski, is the first higher education school in Bulgaria, founded in 1888. The Department of Meteorology and Geophysics was established within the Faculty of Physics. The research and development activities include regional and coastal sea oceanography, marine biogeochemistry and modelling of marine environment, climate modelling, dynamics of atmosphere and oceans. In particular many efforts are devoted to development of Black Sea science knowledge in the frame of numerous international projects (e. g. ECOOP, SESAME, Euro-Argo, SIDERI, E-AIMS).

In 2011 received the Queen’s Anniversary prize for Higher and Further Education in recognition of excellent marine and maritime research. The University has a long record of high quality innovative research as demonstrated by its achievements in the UK Research Assessment Exercise. The university submitted twenty-five Units of Assessment in the 2008 RAE. The results show that the majority of research submitted by the university included world-leading research, achieving the highest rating possible. Overall, 80% of the research was judged as being of international repute.

The Institute of Marine Science (IMS) of the Middle East Technical University (METU) is responsible for graduate teaching and research in marine sciences in three main disciplines: (1) Oceanography (2) Marine Biology and Fisheries, (3) Marine Geology and Geophysics. The Institute carries out research (both observational and theoretical) on the national (the Eastern Mediterranean, the Turkish Straits System, the Black Sea) and international waters (e.g. Atlantic, Southern Oceans). The Ukrainian Scientific Center of Ecology of the Sea (UkrSCES) was founded in January 1992 on the basis of the Odessa Branch State Oceanographic Institute that was organized in 1968. It is the main institution of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine in the field of marine ecological researches. UkrSCES – is an institution of the state ecological monitoring systems within the Black and Azov Seas, which provides a whole complex of tasks of the ecological monitoring. In 1987 Odessa Branch State Oceanographic Institute was nominated as a Regional National Oceanographic Data Centre (Oil Pollution – MARPOLMON) within the framework of IOD and IODE. In accordance with the Strategic Action Plan for Rehabilitation and Protection of the Black Sea the Centre in 1993 has been accredited as a Regional Activity Centre for Pollution Monitoring and Assessment. In 2014 UkrSCES was nominated as IODE Associate Data Unit (ADU) of the Intergovernmental OceanographicCommission of UNESCO (IOC).

We provide a wide range of services dedicated to industrial and environmental applications regarding the underwater environment. Among the services that we can offer are the bathymetrical mapping of marine areas, rivers and lakes, visualizing and characterizing the floor of aquatic basins, mapping bottom sediments types and physical and chemical parameters of water bodies, measuring velocity and direction of marine and fluvial currents as well as the sedimentological and geochemical investigation of bottom material from lakes and seas and hidrochemical investigations.
