The EMODnet service is proud to announce that its Data Ingestion service has been integrated into the EMODnet Portal! The migration of this EMODnet component to the Europa domain is a major milestone for EMODnet, with Ingestion joining the seven thematics in the EMODnet one-stop data and services portal. The core functionalities of EMODnet Data Ingestion services remain the same but are now combined and integrated with the other EMODnet services, making it even easier for potential data providers to find the Ingestion service for sharing data with EMODnet and for the marine community to browse and access ingested datasets.
Since 2023, the seven EMODnet thematics are united with their products and services on the common EMODnet portal, giving a single, user-friendly gateway for accessing, visualising, and downloading of high-quality marine data products. The migration of EMODnet Data Ingestion component concludes the centralization process and it reinforces EMODnet’s commitment to comply to the EU Open Data Directive and INSPIRE Directive. EMODnet Data Ingestion supports in situ ocean observation and monitoring communities to share primary data with EMODnet, with the aim to transform these into Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) data, which are fit for making integrated marine knowledge at European scale, upon which thousands of stakeholders depend to support EU policy implementation, boost competitiveness in the Blue Economy and drive Research and Innovation.
This final step in EMODnet’s centralisation consolidates the remaining component (Data Ingestion) into the EMODnet Portal which is already (since 2023)
EMODnet’s public Data Ingestion service plays a crucial role in European data sharing, identifying and supporting organisations from across research, public, and private sectors that manage valuable marine datasets to share these with EMODnet. The services of Data Ingestion facilitate these providers to submit their datasets – from bathymetry, marine chemistry, physics, biology, and geology to human activities and seabed habitats – in an easy way via the EMODnet portal. Submitted data is reviewed, and made publicly accessible. This can be ‘as-is’, while a selection based upon quality and sufficient metadata can be elaborated following EMODnet standards into FAIR data which are published together with the results of hundreds of other data collection efforts. The elaborated datasets are also shared with the EMODnet thematic groups for inclusion in the generation and provision of EMODnet's pan-European datasets, data products and services.
From uploading data packages and connecting operational monitoring streams, to accessing detailed guidance and tools aligned with FAIR principles, data providers now benefit from a fully integrated service that will boost the process of marine data contribution.
Any data included in EMODnet data products is also made available via the European Digital Twin Ocean, further amplifying its visibility, accessibility, and impact across Europe’s Ocean data ecosystem. This development also strengthens EMODnet’s ability to support major EU and global initiatives, including the EU Green Deal, the Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters, and the UN Ocean Decade.
We invite you to explore the EMODnet Portal and join the large community of data collectors and producers contributing to Europe’s marine data services and the wider European and global open data ecosystems. Wake up your marine data — share it with EMODnet!
