The EMODnet-Geology Caribbean Sea group meets to elaborate new digital geological maps of the region

News article |

From 28 May to 1 June, the EMODnet Geology-Caribbean Workshop was hold in the city of Cotui, Dominican Republic, organized by the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME, CSIC), the Association of Ibero-American Geological and Mining Services (ASGMI) and the National Geological Service of the Dominican Republic. The workshop, which took place at the Technological University of Cibao Oriental (UTECO), was attended by representatives of eight geological services: Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Dominican Republic, as well as ASGMI. Students from the Faculty of Geology of UTECO also participated.
This workshop is part of the series of meetings developed by the recently created EMODnet Geology Caribbean Group, coordinated by the Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (Geological Survey of Spain), whose objective is to produce different thematic geological maps of the seabed in this region (geological, tectonic, geomorphological, seabed sediment maps, mineral and energy resources, geological events, coastal behavior) according to EMODnet methodology.
This technical workshop has strengthened the links between EMODnet and the Caribbean geological services and opened the doors to the development of new initiatives focused on the knowledge of the ocean floor of this region. In addition, this collaboration promotes the dissemination and use of the EMODnet standards.

"First digital geological maps of the seabed and coasts of the Caribbean Sea as a result of the collaboration between the EMODnet-Geology project and the Caribbean Geological Surveys." by Dr. Teresa Medialdea Cela, Head of Marine Geology & Mapping Dv., Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME), 2024
