EMODnet for Mission Ocean and Waters
On 17th February 2023, the EMODnet Secretariat and wider representatives attended the first Annual Forum of the Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030" (Mission Ocean) which brought together stakeholders in Brussels and online to take stock of the first year of implementation of the Mission, showcasing the first portfolio of projects and actions to achieve the Mission’s objectives.
The day was marked by EMODnet launching a new video on the key contribution EMODnet has in delivering a public service for Marine Knowledge that underpins all the Mission Ocean objectives and cross-cutting enablers, including the Digital Ocean and Water Knowledge System. This accompanies a new EMODnet action submitted to the Mission Ocean Charter.
The map layer in the European Atlas of the Seas which provides information on actions submitted by the signatories of the Mission Charter was also promoted in the Map of the Week on the Maritime Forum. Actions presented in the map layer are grouped in five categories: research and innovation, evidence-based knowledge and data, upscaling, deployment and replication of solutions, citizen engagement, outreach, awareness raising and education and training. The map is regularly updated. Do not hesitate to come back to it to see what the new actions are!
During the opening session of the Annual Forum, Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius announced the continuation of the EU4Ocean Coalition’s work into a second wave to further enhance Ocean Literacy in Europe. The EU4Ocean Coalition connects diverse organisations, projects and people that contribute to ocean literacy and the sustainable management of the ocean. Supported by the European Commission, this bottom-up inclusive initiative aims at uniting the voices of Europeans to make the ocean a concern of everyone! It is made up of three communities: the EU4Ocean Platform for organisations and individuals engaged in Ocean Literacy initiatives, the Youth4Ocean Forum which brings together young people between 16 and 30 years old who are passionate about the Ocean and the Network of European Blue Schools.
