There’s never been a better time to harness the power of Open Data to drive new knowledge. During the EU Open Data Days 2025 event at the European Convention Centre in Luxembourg, EMODnet’s Head of Secretariat Kate Larkin showcased EMODnet as a success story for Open and FAIR data in the marine domain, demonstrating how EMODnet is supporting EU Policy, the Blue Economy, Research, Innovation, and society at large. Recordings and presentations are now available online.
The EU Open Data Days 2025 brought together the open data community, including data providers, analysts, policymakers, academics, and open data advocates, to the European Convention Center in Luxembourg for a two-day event. The event aimed to provide an environment for interdisciplinary discussions on how open data is transforming transparency, innovation, policymaking, and society. In total, 289 stakeholders participated in-person, which broadcasted to over 2,300 online viewers.
A diverse group of speakers included academics and researchers, government officials, industry professionals, non-governmental organizations, data scientists and technologists, policymakers, and EU Officials, which in total presented to 289 in-person participants and 2,300 online viewers. The sessions and speakers covered four themes of open data:
Open data ecosystems and governance:
Data access, quality, and interoperability
Data reuse and impact
Data visualization, communication, and literacy
During the day two session on “Data reuse and impact,” Kate Larkin, Head of EMODnet Secretariat represented EMODnet and the marine domain, how EMODnet advances marine knowledge to support EU policies and innovation. The session emphasized the importance of open access to high value marine datasets, adhering to FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) principles, and their role in supporting the EU Green Deal, maritime spatial planning (MSP), and the blue economy. Practical use cases were highlighted, demonstrating the integration of marine data into broader ecosystems like the European Digital Twin Ocean, showcasing the significance of open data in fostering cross-sector collaboration and addressing environmental challenges.
