A highlight of BOOT 2025 was the ongoing collaboration between EMODnet, SSI Scuba Schools International (SSI), and the German Ocean Foundation (GOF). This citizen science initiative enables scuba divers – without any prior experience in data collection – to contribute valuable marine environmental data from their dive computers to EMODnet. And, since SSI is international and has a large cohort of divers, there are millions of dive profiles which include temperature and depth, that can be collected and shared via an SSI-designed app. EMODnet Physics’ experts are leading the ingestion of these citizen science data into EMODnet.
To further engage the diving community, EMODnet presented on “What is EMODnet and how can scuba divers get involved?” at the Love Your Ocean Stand on 20 January. The initiative highlights how citizen science can play a crucial role in filling gaps in ocean knowledge, supporting both research and marine conservation efforts.

EMODnet also took part in discussions on marine data applications for the ports, marinas, and boating sectors. At the Blue Innovation Dock on 20 January, EMODnet presented on “Ports, marinas, and boating: Business uses of EMODnet”, showcasing how marine data can help these industries improve operations, environmental monitoring, and decision-making.
This session built upon insights from the EMODnet for Business workshop, held in October 2024, where over 70 stakeholders from the ports and boating sectors discussed data needs and use cases. The collaboration with European Boating Industry, TransEurope Marinas, and the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) continues to grow, ensuring marine data is accessible and beneficial to industry professionals.

BOOT 2025 also provided a valuable opportunity for EMODnet to connect with its Associated Partners. EMODnet’s Head of Secretariat, Kate Larkin, met with Savvy Navvy, a company demonstrating how open marine data can drive innovation in boating applications. By integrating EMODnet data, Savvy Navvy provides boaters with tools to make safer and more sustainable navigation decisions. Reflecting on the value of such partnerships, Savvy Navvy highlighted the importance of events like BOOT Düsseldorf in fostering collaboration, launching new projects, and strengthening industry ties. The dialogue between EMODnet and its Associated Partners continues to drive forward data-sharing initiatives and innovative marine applications.

EMODnet also met with Oceano Vox, another Associated Partner, which has successfully completed the testing phase for cost-efficient ocean observation devices designed to be installed on ships navigating in coastal waters. With a growing demand for real-time, in situ data, these devices will complement existing data collection processes while ensuring full GDPR compliance and data anonymization. The collected data will serve both scientific research and maritime safety, providing ship operators with enhanced forecasts based on real-time data while making the information available to EMODnet Physics.

EMODnet’s engagement with GOF and SSI at BOOT 2025 reinforced the importance of citizen science in marine data collection. By enabling scuba divers to contribute environmental data, this initiative enhances the availability of temperature and depth records, which are now visible in the EMODnet Map Viewer. The growing demand for open-access marine data across research, policy, and industry highlights the critical role of such collaborations.
EMODnet extends its gratitude to GOF for hosting a stand at BOOT 2025, providing a platform to showcase collaborative citizen science activities. With multiple presentations from GOF and EMODnet colleagues, the event successfully raised awareness about the value of marine data in supporting the Blue Economy and ocean sustainability.
