Extensive wreck data set now available on EMODnet

News article |

A new data set containing over 94,000 charted, uncharted, wrecks from around the world is now available on EMODnet. The data set is maintained by the UK Hydrographic Office and receives regular quarterly updates. Where available, for each wreck information is reported such as name, type, flag, length, depth, date sunk, circumstances of loss, etc. The coverage of this data set is truly impressive, both in space and time. It includes wrecks from any corner of the ocean, and from any era. Some wrecks date back to millennia ago, some others got sunk only a few years ago. Possibly, it’s the most comprehensive wreck data set in the world. This data set complements and extends the EMODnet offer of wreck data sets. In the past, EMODnet focused on wrecks of “historical value”, whereas the new data set has the ambition to map any ships that, for whatever reason, has sunk.

The UK Hydrographic Office makes available the data set free of charge under an Open Government License, which can be accessed here.
