On 26-27 September 2023, EMODnet and EC DG MARE co-organised the online workshop “EMODnet Marine Data for Coastal Tourism”. The workshop assessed data requirements, data uses and data sharing opportunities, with diverse stakeholders from the private sector, research, policy and NGOs.
During the EMODnet Open Conference 2023, Kate Larkin, Head of the EMODnet Secretariat, recorded a podcast for the Nippon Foundation & GEBCO Seabed 2030 initiative. She spoke about the objectives and operations of EMODnet, and EMODnet’s offer of high resolution pan-European bathymetric data and data products e.g., Digital Terrain models, for global users.
An autumn of events for EMODnet Physics. At Festival della Scienza, there were two interesting contributions: the talk “OceanBigData” and the collaboration at OGS Lab Quando la scienza dà i numeri - L’impatto dei dati scientifici, giusti e sbagliati. The keynote “Seas of Data: EMODnet commitment” was held at REMEDIES cluster meeting. Finally, a lecture was given at the IOI at University of Malta on EMODnet utility and functionality for managers and policy makers.
The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) programme is designed to assemble existing, but fragmented and partly inaccessible, marine data and to create contiguous and publicly available information layers which are interoperable and free of restrictions on use, and which encompass whole marine basins.
The latest version of the maps visualising the spatial and temporal distribution of marine litter is available on the EMODnet map viewer. This version contains for the first time 16 maps for floating microlitter in all European sea basins and beyond. These data products are based on the latest data collections published in 2023, as described in a recent EMODnet webnews. Using animations, these products show the distribution of 1) net location and mesh size used, 2) microlitter density per net...
After 14 years of activity, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has confirmed the same partnership at the helm of EMODnet Chemistry for the next two years. The EMODnet Chemistry steering committee illustrated the way forward until 2 October 2025 to the project full group during the kick-off meeting on 28 November 2023.
The data published increased our holdings by roughly 1.5 million records and includes data from 1970 to 2022 from the North Atlantic and the North Sea. These data provide information on all groups except reptiles and ranging from methodologies to abundance or habitats.
The 3-day workshop took place in late September and was co-organised by the G7 FSOI and EuroGOOS. The aim was to provide advice on how to overcome the data infrastructures, observing and forecasting systems current gaps and limitations.
The EMODnet Biology course hosted by the Ocean Teacher platform has been updated. This new version is open to self-enrolment until May 2025 and includes a new section on how to provide information on seabed habitats.
The call is designed to engage institutions that manage marine biodiversity data to improve and implement streamlined workflows and procedures that promote and facilitate the sharing of critical marine biodiversity missing data through EMODnet Biology and subsequently the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EU DTO).
