Map of the Week – Blue Economy – Fisheries products processing sector

Europe’s oceans, seas and coasts are a major driver for the European economy, generating roughly 5 million jobs and a turnover of almost 750 billion a year in 2018[1]. Europe’s blue economy will play an important role in achieving the European Green Deal[2] targets, through the provision of renewable energy, more sustainable sources of protein and by reducing pressure on land resources.  The Blue Economy must also transform under the Green Deal’s axes of decarbonisation, zero-pollution, circularity and biodiversity. A recent roadmap[3] launched by the European Commission envisages a green post-COVID future for the Blue Economy, the goal being to aid economic recovery and tackle climate change, by promoting sustainable products and services that preserve the marine environment and maintain ocean health.

The BlueInvest platform, enabled by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF), aims to boost innovation and investment in sustainable blue technologies and can play an important role in supporting the recovery of blue economy sectors. On the 26th of January 2021, the BlueInvest Day 2021 brought together innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, corporates and enablers in the Blue Economy, with the objective of generating concrete business opportunities and improving the visibility of Blue Economy businesses. The event also featured how open marine data, offered by the European Marine Open Data Network (EMODnet), can benefit maritime businesses, by reducing their costs, promoting opportunities for innovation and reducing the risks of working on the coast or at sea. The BlueInvest Awards 2021 were granted to Europe’s top start-ups and SMEs in four Blue Economy categories with the highest level of interest from impact investors and are EU Green Deal priorities: Energy from the Ocean, Green Shipping Solutions, Sustainable Food & Feed from the Ocean and Healthy Oceans and Resilient Coasts.

Our map of the week highlights the growth in one of the Blue Economy sectors: the fisheries and seafood products processing sector. It shows the production values in millions or EURO for the European countries in 2017. Click on a country to see how the production values have changed between 2004 and 2017.
