De Grote Post - Open Conference

The former post-office building dating from 1953 is a masterpiece from the modernist era by architect Gaston Eysselinck. Thanks to its architectural merits, the building was listed as a monument in 1981. At the time, it was Flanders’ youngest building to be listed as a monument. The City of Oostende acquired the listed post-office building in 2003. After a thorough two-year renovation, De Grote Post is ready to conquer the cultural public. Inside the front part of the building, in the hall where the post office's counters used to be, there is now a foyer with a reception area and exhibition hall. Part of the central section was torn down and replaced with a new construction whose corridors or ‘tubes’ are real eye-catchers. The new building houses two theatres. The four storeys accommodate rooms for courses, lectures and workshops. The former canteen which was on the top floor has been converted into a party hall which offers a magnificent view on the Leopoldpark.
