On 3–4 February 2026, EMODnet participated actively in the CS-MACH1 Marine Citizen Science (MSC) Data Network workshop held in Ostend (Belgium) and online. The workshop formally launched the Marine Citizen Science Data Network (MCSDN), bringing together over 350 citizen scientists, data experts, cost-effective technology developers and data users from across Europe and beyond to strengthen collaboration and accelerate FAIR marine data flows.
EMODnet Chemistry has completed phase five and started the new phase. The Coordinator, OGS, Italy, notes they are honoured by the EMODnet (Chemistry) community’s steadfast support, which have made the exciting 2025 highlights and over 15 years of work possible. Since 2009, the core network of EMODnet Chemistry has improved the wealth of EMODnet services for accessing data on eutrophication, ocean acidification, contaminants, and marine litter. Over the years, the volume of data from various…
On 24 November 2025, the EMODnet Partner network — comprising 133 organisations from 33 countries — gathered in Brussels for the EMODnet Partner Jamboree meeting, ahead of the EMODnet Open Conference 2025. This community event brought together experts from EMODnet’s seven thematics — Biology, Bathymetry, Geology, Seabed Habitats, Chemistry, Physics, Human Activities, EMODnet Data Ingestion, Central Portal and Secretariat. The partner meetings included kick-off meeting of some thematics’ new…
The Consortium, responsible for the development of EMODnet Chemistry, has been confirmed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) until 2 October 2027. The main goals for the next two years and the activities to be undertaken in the first six months were presented during the kick-off meeting, which took place in Brussels during the EMODnet Jamboree and Open Conference 2025. To dive into EMODnet Chemistry data and data products and for more information,…
EMODnet’s Chemistry experts presented at SciDataCon 2025, an integral part of International Data Week 2025 which took place in Brisbane, Australia, 13-16 October 2025. Taking part in a session on the transformative role of data in SDGs and disaster resilience, EMODnet presented on how its service supports international marine policy against marine pollution. This included A wide range of EMODnet use cases, involving various types of data providers and users. The marine knowledge value chain at…
On 29 September, the webinar with the EMODnet Chemistry Board of Experts on the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) was held online to showcase the new climatologies for parameters that enable scientists to assess the trophic state of marine waters. Since 2017, collecting feedback from experts is a powerful method that EMODnet Chemistry has used to fine-tune data products according to MSFD needs.
The OGS, as coordinator of EMODnet Chemistry, have contributed to the paper “Out of sight, but not out of mind: Key issues regarding seafloor macrolitter monitoring”. The paper was authored by the EC Joint Research Centre and co-authored by renowned universities, research and monitoring centres worldwide. They highlight the importance of collecting quality data to quantify marine litter on the seafloor, that is out-of- sight, but should not be out of mind.
Since December 2024, the EMODnet Chemistry team has been hard at work compiling the new data collections for eutrophication– acidity and contaminants. The annual task of updating these data collections is important as the data are used by key agencies such as the European Environment Agency (EEA). We interviewed three data managers from OGS, Italy, Coordinator of EMODnet Chemistry, to find out more, including why this year was even more challenging, yet impactful, and how EEA use these data…
