A simple dashboard for visualising trends in oxygen and nitrate concentrations

The user organisation

EOSC-Future is an EU-funded H2020 project that lasted from April 2021 to the end of March 2024. The project implemented the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). EOSC provides European researchers with a virtual environment for sharing and accessing research data across borders and scientific disciplines. EOSC-Future developed and operated key components of the EOSC core: the services required for the operation of the EOSC. Some examples of the services developed within EOSC Future are the EOSC Marketplace, the EOSC Interoperability Framework , the EOSC Catalogue

To achieve this, the consortium has adopted a system-of-systems approach for the EOSC platform, linking other research portals, resources and services to meet the data needs of a wide range of stakeholders. Finally, the project partnership provided anyone willing to provide external qualified services or data with guidelines for their integration into the EOSC. The consortium consists of 35 partners: universities and other research institutions such as the University of Göttingen (Germany) and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (Italy), ICT companies, European research infrastructure consortia such as the European Plate Observing System (EPOS), the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and LifeWatch, data infrastructures such as EUDAT and e-infrastructures for Open Science such as OpenAIRE.

EMODnet services used

As part of the EU project EOSC Future, the partners of ENVRI-FAIR are involved in the development of a dashboard for the state of the environment, which is available on the EOSC Future website under “Data in action.

The ENVRI-FAIR community consists of environmental research infrastructures and e-infrastructures working together to make data and services findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable to enable high quality and holistic understanding of the Earth system.

The dashboard provides users with easy means to determine the state of the Earth system and track trends for a selected number of Essential Ocean Variables, such as temperature, oxygen and nutrients. The dashboard concerns the Earth components Atmosphere, Ocean, and Biodiversity. EMODnet Chemistry data of oxygen and nitrate concentrations were used to calculate the seasonal and annual trends of these variables, expressed as mean values. This information is provided by simple graphs, which are also available in the same tool for the temperature trend in the European seas. 

In addition, OGS and MARIS, as coordinators of EMODnet Chemistry, provided scientific and technical support in the calculation of the indicators to assess annual and seasonal trend of oxygen and nitrate over years in the Mediterranean Sea, and the development of the dashboard. 

The Dashboard is part of the ENVRI-Hub, a common virtual interface for ENVRI-FAIR data and services, integrated into the EOSC Platform. Impact of EMODnet

In this way EMODnet Chemistry helps address the challenge of displaying data of different natures and from multiple sources in a single user-driven tool. This also bridges the gap between scientists and citizens, as it can easily be used by non-experts to find out about the state of the various environmental compartments and their evolution over time.

Access to EMODnet's marine data is instrumental for marine scientists, policymakers, and industries, providing valuable insights into ocean processes and phenomena, with the available data being essential for addressing global challenges such as climate change and ocean pollution.
