In the first six months of 2025 alone, EMODnet has actively responded to key EU consultations related to ocean and environmental policy, open data and future EU funding. The year kicked off with a call for evidence for the European Ocean Pact – an all-encompassing framework for EU ocean policy that includes the EU Ocean Observation Initiative, the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive, the Marine Strategy Framework and more.

Brussels, 15 July 2025 — EMODnet met with Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, at the Berlaymont building in Brussels for a strategic exchange on the role of EMODnet as a key EU public asset for Marine Knowledge. The meeting underscored EMODnet’s contribution to European marine policy and its alignment with the newly launched European Ocean Pact.

This new data product, created by the University of Sheffield, matches the occurrences of macrobenthic invertebrate species in European seas to a map of seabed habitat types as defined in the EMODnet broad-scale seabed habitat map (EUSeaMap) by EMODnet Seabed Habitats. For this product we use the standard European Nature Information System (EUNIS) habitat classifications for marine sediments.
