Discussing the scientific and technical basis for coordinating, standardising and harmonising the monitoring of seafloor litter and the management of associated data at a global level was the aim of the recent international workshop in China. EMODnet Chemistry was one of the speakers at this invitation-only event, representing the European Marine Observation and Data Network.
EMODnet Chemistry took stock of its recent achievements during the last back-to-back meetings of the whole partnership and the steering committee. The meeting took place on 23 and 24 September 2024 in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the headquarters of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).
The recent General Assembly of the EMODnet Chemistry was a good opportunity to present relevant ways in which the project pursues the principles of Open Science (OS). The University of Liège (ULiege) showed how the project implements open science thanks to open source software. Charles Troupin from ULiege referred in particular to EMODnet Chemistry's use of the netCDF format and the NCDatasets.jl package, which is described in a recent EMODnet news article.
At the latest edition of IMDIS EMODnet Chemistry contributed to the session "Products: Data products, information and knowledge” with the presentation “Broad ranges for quality control of coastal data related to marine eutrophication: the Mediterranean Sea case study”.The study presented by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics(OGS) and the Hellenic National Oceanographic Data Centre contributes to t
On 30th November 2023, an EMODnet Call to Action was launched at the Closing Session of the EMODnet Open Conference 2023. The Call to Action outlined EMODnet’s achievements to-date, emerging areas of development, and the need for an evolution in the governance and funding of EMODnet, to ensure a fully functioning, sustainable EC marine data service.
EMODnet experts from the Secretariat and wider partnership represented EMODnet at the first United Nations Ocean Decade (UN OD) Conference 2024, held in Barcelona from 10-12 April. EMODnet contributed to the Ocean Prediction booth and to number of sessions and week-long side events spanning Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPS) for the European Digital Twin Ocean (DTO), CoastPredict and the JPI Knowledge Hub on Sea Level Rise, the UN OD Challenge 8 digital representation of the ocean, and…
EMODnet is pleased to announce and welcome 3 new associated partners in Spring 2024: RGI, VOTO and Oceano VOX. Each bringing unique expertise and a strong commitment to advancing collaboration with EMODnet in the areas of data sharing, best practices in marine data, information technology and data services, and expanding the users of EMODnet, including for the Blue Economy.
EMODnet was well represented at the Oceanology International 2024 and European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) Technology Forum that took place back-to-back in mid-March 2024 in London, UK. EMODnet Physics, Chemistry, Data Ingestion and wider experts were on-site, complementing a pan-EMODnet feature article in the Hydro International magazine that accompanied the OI 2024 event.
On 30 and 31 January, EMODnet Chemistry organised a training course for all data providers. It took place in Trieste (Italy), the headquarters of the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics - OGS, which coordinates the project.
EMODnet Physics increased the amount of data available from New Zealand via the collaboration with MetOcean Solutions, the MOANA project and the Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network. The MOANA project, in particular, brings together 54 experts from across 14 national and international organisations that are trying to map, besides the oceans around New Zealand, local ocean dynamics which is extremely sparse, and not readily available to the people who need it, providing a more complete…
