EMODnet’s Chemistry experts presented at SciDataCon 2025, an integral part of International Data Week 2025 which took place in Brisbane, Australia, 13-16 October 2025. Taking part in a session on the transformative role of data in SDGs and disaster resilience, EMODnet presented on how its service supports international marine policy against marine pollution. This included A wide range of EMODnet use cases, involving various types of data providers and users. The marine knowledge value chain at…
On 29 September, the webinar with the EMODnet Chemistry Board of Experts on the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) was held online to showcase the new climatologies for parameters that enable scientists to assess the trophic state of marine waters. Since 2017, collecting feedback from experts is a powerful method that EMODnet Chemistry has used to fine-tune data products according to MSFD needs.
The OGS, as coordinator of EMODnet Chemistry, have contributed to the paper “Out of sight, but not out of mind: Key issues regarding seafloor macrolitter monitoring”. The paper was authored by the EC Joint Research Centre and co-authored by renowned universities, research and monitoring centres worldwide. They highlight the importance of collecting quality data to quantify marine litter on the seafloor, that is out-of- sight, but should not be out of mind.
Since December 2024, the EMODnet Chemistry team has been hard at work compiling the new data collections for eutrophication– acidity and contaminants. The annual task of updating these data collections is important as the data are used by key agencies such as the European Environment Agency (EEA). We interviewed three data managers from OGS, Italy, Coordinator of EMODnet Chemistry, to find out more, including why this year was even more challenging, yet impactful, and how EEA use these data…
In June 2025, the European Commission launched the European Ocean Pact, a framework for connecting EU ocean-related policy which puts marine knowledge front-and-centre as a cross-cutting foundation and an enabler for delivering EU policy – from Maritime Spatial Planning Directive (MSPD) to the Nature Restoration, including EU Member State commitments to global ocean policy frameworks including the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). This follows the EC call for evidence for the…
EMODnet played a significant role in two recent global ocean events in June 2025: the One Ocean Science Congress (OOSC) and the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3). As a key contributor to the European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO) at the Digital Ocean Pavilion, EMODnet experts together with the European Commission DG MARE were active through poster exhibitions, workshops on regional data services for the global ocean data ecosystem and showcasing EMODnet’s marine knowledge supporting…
At the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU GA), EMODnet Chemistry presented its mission and development, as well as the many use cases collected in its 16 years of activity. The EGU GA welcomes international geoscientists working in all disciplines of Earth, planetary and space sciences. In addition to the overview of the project results, the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), which coordinates EMODnetChemistry, presented a poster explaining the…
The EMODnet service is proud to announce that its Data Ingestion service has been integrated into the EMODnet Portal! The migration of this EMODnet component to the Europa domain is a major milestone for EMODnet, with Ingestion joining the seven thematics in the EMODnet one-stop data and services portal. The core functionalities of EMODnet Data Ingestion services remain the same but are now combined and integrated with the other EMODnet services, making it even easier for potential data…
The International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO has awarded the Ocean Best Practices System Endorsement Certificate to EMODnet Chemistry’s Guide for the management of microlitter datasets. These data, along with the data on beach and seafloor litter, were used to produce the latest marine litter data collections downloadable from the EMODnet Products Catalogue. The collections in turn are used to create the…
Building on the existing data and web services, EMODnet’s Chemistry offer of aggregated, harmonised and validated datasets on many marine chemistry parameters e.g., eutrophication and ocean acidification (first made available in 2024) are now also available through the Environmental Research Division Data Access Program (ERDDAP™), covering the Baltic Sea, Greater North Sea and Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, and Arctic Ocean.
